Grand Hyatt Erawan in Bangkok Review

Writer's picture: Kirk Kirk

This is a great hotel and one of my favorites. Not just for the hotel but also the wonderful staff. I am a huge fan of the Hyatt brand and I go out of my way to stay at them if they are available at my destination.

Bangkok has several great Hyatt properties, including the Park Hyatt and Hyatt Regency. There are others, but these are the only three that I consider when traveling there. But the Park Hyatt is considerably more expensive even in terms of points so I tend to narrow my focus to this hotel and the Hyatt Regency.

I have flip-flopped on my preferences over the years. I used to enjoy the grand Hyatt, but in recent years, I’ve shifted more towards the Hyatt Regency. Not that that it is a superior hotel, but it’s in a convenient location for my lifestyle. Where is the grand Hyatt is in a more upscale area close to high end shopping, the Regency is more of a local Flavor and closer to street food, pharmacies, less expensive foot massage areas, and street shopping. I also tend to get better upgrades at the Regency.

The hotel gives the feeling of being upscale. The rates are usually around $200 per night, and I’ve seen them closer to $100 during the pandemic, but I pay in points, 12,000 of them, putting them about in the middle of the Hyatt brands. This is a bit high for Thailand but you’ve got to expect to pay more in the heart of the city. But this is a bargain for big city US prices for a hotel of this quality.

My Room

I used one of my suite upgrades to get a corner suite on the second highest floor. This gave me easy stair access to the club lounge as well.

The suite had a separated living area from the bedroom and two bathrooms. One a full bath with rain shower and the second just a mini bathroom. But the most impressive aspect of the room was the view. Both the living room and bedroom had large windows with sweeping views of the city.

Sorry, I photographed before the housekeeper showed up so excuse the messy room!

My view from the bedroom:

Yeah I know this is too much room for one person but I never refuse a free upgrade!

I’m not really an art enthusiast as I really don’t get most art. I found these pieces of art in the hotel a bit intriguing, but onot because I thought it looked like grade school art work. See how little I know?

But other than the artwork there were many displays which added to the decor of this fine property.

The fitness room is always important to me when I travel. Soon after I wake up, I usually will exercise for about an hour in total. I prefer the low impact exercises because of my arthritic back, so I’m looking for something like an elliptical. This room had many of them, and it was never crowded during my stay.

There was space for all to work out. And ample equipment for any type of exercise you would want to do.

The pool area was immaculate. Many chairs and I never saw it crowded during my stay. There was also an attendant there who would give you towels.

i’m really not much of a public pool guy so I didn’t spend any time here. Mostly it just seemed like families with young children use the area. Another reason for me not to stick around. I know what kids do in pools.

Breakfast was a big event. As a globalist member of Hyatt, I was given the option of eating in the club lounge or eating downstairs in the main dining area. Technically a globalist is only supposed to eat in the club lounge, but some hotels allow the choice. Whenever I’m allowed the choice, I always choose the main dining area. Although it’s more crowded than the club lounge, there are usually a ton of more options for food .

Not only was this an impressive food display, you could also order off the menu, a few items anyway. Each morning I ordered eggs Benedict and Wagyu noodle soup which I told them to hold the noodles.

A nice touch in the dining area for breakfast was this yogurt station, which was manned by this lady. Unable to resist each morning. I had a specialty made yogurt as you can see in the video below.

I regret I forget to photo the club lounge but it really was not all that impressive in size nor food choices. But each day I did enjoy the food and drinks offered which were complimentary in the evening time for globalists.

Oh, one last thing. This hotel also offers these great villas with private pools. In my many stays here I only secured one once. It was on a one night stay. These villas are private and great!

I think they will only give you a complimentary upgrade to these villas if you’re here on only a single night stay. I don’t think they want to be too generous with these upgrades.

This concludes my review of the grand Hyatt Erawan in Bangkok. A solid choice if you’re looking for a hotel in the heart of Bangkok, especially if you want to be in the more upscale area. But again, I’m not an upscale person so I prefer to be at the Hyatt Regency, which has much more local feel to it.

Wow, what a beautiful place. It seems like there are not many people there. I would think the place would have to be full all the time in order to make bank. Thanks for sharing.
